I have sent thre...It's always been about the money. I have sent three children through the public school system here. K through 5 at Champlain and 6 through 8 at Edmunds. Champlain was simply an excellent experience. Edmunds started to become more of a challenge as kids started slipping through the cracks. I was a very hands-on parent when it came to their education and worked very closely with Bonnie Poe at Edmunds. She put a tremendous amount of time and energy into that school and all of students that attended it. I could sense her frustration with being limited to what she could do due to lack of resources. Consolidation, unfortunately, is a natural occurrence. You mention Taft and Thayer buildings, those were community schools in their time. What about Adams? Remember Adams School? Another neighborhood school that fell to consolidation. Fewer schools with the same level of resources. What does that give you. More resources to apply to fewer facilities. Are people going to lose jobs? Absolutely!! Again additional available resources. Raising the per pupil block is not the answer, that's just throwing more money at the problem and in the end that will be all you done, it's just throwing money at the problem with not much more bang for the buck. I have spent my whole life in Burlington and it absolutely saddens me to see what it has become. Not all of it has been negative, but you can't an upside without a corresponding downside. Schools have been drifting away from being the education centers they were meant to be to becoming social service centers. The focus has been blurred and is in real danger of being lost. Poverty, you are always going to have that. Affordable housing in Burlington is a myth. Everything that we do in this city affects the cost of housing. With each new school budget that gets rammed through, there are all kinds of cost increases. Those are passed along in the form of property tax increases. Who do think pays for that? The Landlords? It reflected in the rents and mortgage payments of all of us regardless of income level. I have enough so that every year when it goes up I don't have to worry about what I'm going to have cut back on, whether it be rent, food, insurance or even if I'll have to pick up an additional job to make ends meet. I've known a lot of people who have simply been priced out of Burlington, but then again they don't matter. Do they. You really need to consider why you're doing this. Is it really for the community or is it for you, because that's what you came here expecting. The community as whole is affected and it won't be positive outcome for everyone involved.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5505270674595578084.post-50198156542863016522008-11-11T04:56:00.000-08:002008-11-11T04:56:00.000-08:00This is great info to know. This is great info to know.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5505270674595578084.post-1564029077325751622007-11-26T11:45:00.000-08:002007-11-26T11:45:00.000-08:00Hello!I'm on the speak out committee for MLK day r...Hello!

I'm on the speak out committee for MLK day run by Burlington's own CEDO VISTAS, would you have Sarah's contact info? Cutting properties that have high costs and low yield is essential. However, I feel that low cost and high yield describe what we are getting from Lawrence Barnes. Pushing the Barnes people out may give a short term gain, but after you pay for all the extra services, refitting furniture and renovations to buildings it will not only come up as a loss, but the School District will have lost a valuable asset while paying for patchwork. An unheard of amount of un-budgeted money is going into the Taft building, just to keep the doors open, which is producing a low yield. I feel that the School board should get free from that building and reclaim any space that they are renting out to other agencies. There is more space available at Saint Marks School in the New North End that is cheap to maintain and cheap to rent, if more space is needed.
Andrew Tomczak
15 Allen Street Apt.3
Burlington, VTAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5505270674595578084.post-41294544033285923272007-10-02T05:53:00.000-07:002007-10-02T05:53:00.000-07:00The concept of children walking to school and bein...The concept of children walking to school and being actively involved in their neighborhoods lies at the heart of public education in Burlington. I live just around the corner from Wheeler and love watching all the parents walking their kids to school in the mornings - it's a real community. One neighborhood mom told me that because the school is so close, she's able to touch base with her children's teachers almost every day - an unquantifiable but absolutely invaluable contribution to her kids' academic success. - Betsy Allen-PennebakerAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5505270674595578084.post-32166373859270175282007-10-01T09:56:00.000-07:002007-10-01T09:56:00.000-07:00Leslie C. Families move out for suburban schools every day. Let's bring them back. Instead of lamenting the declining enrollment, let's have the guts and fortitude to create a school system that attracts increasing enrollment.
And in that vision of our future, we need at least all the elementary schools we have now.
